David Letterman was given a funny farewell by four living U.S. presidents on his last "Late Show" on Wednesday, with each one saying that "our long national nightmare is over."
It started with archival footage of President Gerald Ford's popular claim that "our long national nightmare is over," following the departure of President Richard Nixon.
Living presidents George Bush, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and George W. Bush repeated the famous line. The bit ended with President Obama facing the camera, declaring: "Our long national nightmare is over," noting: "Letterman is retiring."
Letterman, 68, then stepped into the frame and jokingly asked: "you're just kidding, right?" Obama, 53, then shrugged with a smirk.
Besides President Obama and the three past U.S. presidents, there were plenty of A-list celebrities who honored the legendary host including Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Tina Fey, Bill Murray and Alec Baldwin.
President Obama recently shared about the retiring late night host: "We've grown up with you…The country has, after a tough day at the office or coming home from work, knowing you've been there to give us a little bit a joy a little bit of laughter, it has meant so much. You're part of all of us."
